Portal Designer & Developer Volunteer Opportunity
2018 Volunteer Application
Come and help our partners develop an exemplary marine wildlife monitoring portal! This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to a great conservation project, and work with a team of excellent, fun and dedicated marine scientists and conservationists.
RedSEE — A Citizen Science Portal for the Red Sea
RedSEE is a citizen science program for monitoring short, medium and long-term trends of important marine ecosystems and umbrella species in the Red Sea, suggesting best practices to reduce the impact of water-based activities on the marine environment, and encouraging positive behavior.
The concept is simple » trained dive guides and tour operators run periodical monitoring of marine ecosystems and species at selected sites along the Red Sea. Trained diving centers and operators register to an online database, they are then given their own login details and can upload/enter data (including pictures and videos) online and offline.
The program includes monitoring protocols for ecosystems (including coral reefs, seagrass habitats), umbrella species (e.g., Marine turtles and mammals, Sharks, Dugongs, Reef fish), Bio-indicators and early warning systems such as Coral bleaching, invasive species outbreaks, marine debris, oil spill and pollution.
We Need Your Help For…
We need an outstanding online database which will be used as our main marketing tool! Bear in mind that we will be providing all the wildlife & habitat monitoring training for free (we are in the process of fundraising this), and we hope to entice diving centers and other organizations to join by showing them how they can use this online platform to promote their business (e.g. proposing environmentally friendly activities, providing opportunities for tourists to make their dive count, etc.)
The online database should be semi-public, i.e. reports should be publicly viewable, but access to the data should be restricted to people with logins. The project participants will have access to their personal data. The project admins will have access and be able to download and use all data.
What’s In It For You
This is such an important conservation project, and we’ll be forever grateful for this help! We are looking for funds and partners at this stage, but we would appreciate help with building this portal and suggestions about where to host the database at no-or-low cost. We are aware that a well-designed portal with a database and an easy-to-use form to upload data are needed tools to get people involved in data collection and reporting, and we would be very happy to advertise your company (if you are affiliated or if your company supports this) as one of the most important sponsors supporting the project.
And there’s more! This is a great opportunity to learn a ton about and have an impact in marine conservation. We welcome you and we’ll share with you diligently and enthusiastically on this topic. We’ll accredit your work, we’ll acknowledge and thank you in our social media.
You can work from anywhere in the world. We’ll communicate via conference calls using web tools.
